Bolton, MA – On Wednesday, September 27th, 2017, a line of strong to severe thunderstorms ripped across portions of eastern Ontario and Quebec. One particularly strong cell slammed into the Britannia Bay area of Ottawa, ON just after 3PM local time. It produced intense winds, damaging homes and buildings, snapping trees, and seriously injuring at least two people. These extreme winds and the resultant damage were likely the result of a strong downburst.
And WeatherFlow was positioned to record this event. It’s weather station, located at Britannia Yacht Club (pictured), measured a peak sustained one-minute rolling average wind speed of 87.5 mph (140.8 km/h) and a peak gust of 99.7 mph (160.5 km/h).
